Smoke Hides the Sun

Our morning started out with a visit from a hairy woodpecker who tapped and tapped until we finally had to take his picture; then he flew off.  Actually, he was warning us of the fire that started in Tres Lagunas, north of Pecos on New Mexico Route 63.  A downed powerline seems to be the cause.  Over 900 acres have burned so far.

The ash is covering the sun and the glow is an eerie glow here at campsite 14 in the El Porvenir Campground in the Santa Fe National Forest.

We climbed the hill behind our campsite.

And took a little walk to pick up a few pieces of choice pine to send to our friend John who will make it in to a vase. As we walked back we could see more and more smoke moving into the valley.

And look who we found!

The smoke was filling the area so we packed up even though the forest department had only called a stage one alert to the campground.

You can see the smoke was filling the valley as we departed the Santa Fe National Forest area.

This was our view looking back to where we had been camping.

We parked in Las Vegas and walked around the Plaza Hotel.

Will tried to make a call on the old time phone because:

We continued our walk around the central square.

Barbwire guitar!

Someone made a lego model of the old pharmacy right down to the two Indian statues at the doorway!

We got icecreams at the oldtime soda fountain.

And continued our walk around the square.

The smoke was blocking the sun!

the smoke kept moving with the wind.

The architecture in this town is amazing.

Great doorways.

We strolled around an antique store and this little kitty just napped as we walked by.

The grand Plaza Hotel is in the background; the eerie sun makes it seem later than it is.

This tree died and they cut around the bark close to the ground level; bet they are going to make a wood sculpture of it.

NYPD? New York Pizza Department!!  Haaa haaa haa

The smoke is still moving.  We plan to stay in town a few days to see what the fire is doing.
