Scarlet Runner Beans

Image
Sue gave us some scarlet runner beans. Her grandfather called them string beans. Most people grow them for their big red flowers but the beans are editable. Those that do eat them usually pick them when they are small. When they get big ther have s "strung along both sides that you have to take off. They are so good. The taste is much like edamame. Thanks for the addition to dinner, Sue and Gerhard. Pretty sunset tonight

Justin.- Update

He is still in the hospital in Hawaii with pains.  Doing more tests to see if they need to remove the gallbladder. Got this text from Justin this morning: Well, unrelated to my cold, I was in the ER and have been admitted to the hospital. I apparently passed a gallstone tonight. I don't recommend it. It's after midnight now and they want to run more tests so I'm in over the night. Might have to change my diet a bit. The ER doctor doesn't think I'll need it removed but I'll find out more after tomorrow's tests. He is still at the hospital waiting for an MRI. We will keep you posted.

Rain and Sunshine

Image
After a few days of rain the sun came out to visit. We had some guests stop by. They are visiting the province from out west. It was their first time aboard a lobster boat. Will had fun fishing off the boat docked here in Pictou harbor. He caught a large mackerel and a few tinkers. And he caught what we think is a bass. We took a walk along the Jetney Trail and picked lots of blackberries. Time for some blackberry jam and a blackberry pie. When the sun shines it is fun being out and about weather it is from far away or just around the corner.

Fresh Garden Goodies

Image
We stopped out to see our friends, Sue and Gerhard. Crammer too ran out to meet us. He loves playing ball with Will. What a great garden they have. It takes lots of work, but the are blessed with fresh veggies to last long into the winter. And still have some to share. Yummy fresh veggies. Kathy's Mother's Day flower from Nicole lives here and is doing very well showing off all the blossoms it can. Our little garden is also doing well producing several ripe tomatoes.

Ship Hector

Image
Went to visit with our friend, Ashley. She volunteers at the Hector Quay where we had volunteered in 1998-2000 to help build and launch the replica of the ship that bright the first Scottish immigrants to the new world back in 1793. The ship was a cargo ship and that year the cargo was 189 passengers headed for the new world and a better life. Below deck were the sleeping bunks. Each family had one bunk and a pint of water for each day. That water was for washing, cooking and drinking. The voyage was to last 14 days but because a storm lasted 22 days crossing the Atlantic Ocean. You can see our boat across the way.

NSYO Concert

Image
The Nova Scotia Youth Concert was playing at the DeCoste Center. Tickets were just &10 so we decided to have a night out. My goodness were we glad we did!! The evening started with the Heatherbells bagpipers at the marina as we got fish and chips for dinner at the local stand. Across the way you could hear the Mennonite choir singing as we sat on the deck of the DeCoste eating our dinner. At 7:00 we went inside ready to listen to a group of 12 year olds play. We relaxed and waited as the show was half an hour late. The curtain opened and from that moment we were just mesmerized with the remarkable talent of these young musicians. The conductor, Dinuk Wijeratne, has played Carnegie Hall with Yo Yo Ma, taught at Juillard in NY, and is not only a conductor but also a composer, a pianist, and an instructor. Nadina Mackie Jackson was the featured soloist. She is Canada's most recorded solo bassoonist. The Bassoon Concerto in E-Flat major was the opening and we sat in awe. Nadina

Fishing

It had been a week if cool windy weather down here on the water. Today we had a bit of sun and the water was calm. Bill and Linda came along and brought their grandson, Manny. Manny was aboard Kimball's Babe last year for his birthday. Proud grandparents Bill did the lines. Will at the helm. off we went out into the harbor headed for our favorite fishing spot. While the guys fished Manny had fun playing with buckets of water. Manny liked seeing the fish but didn't want to touch them. We caught lots of tinkers, ones too small to keep. We ended up with a few more dinners of mackerel. Kathy cleaned them and put them all in the fridge and we headed back to the dock. About half way there it happened. Bill yelled" you have lots of water coming in." And sure enough water was a squirting in. We had a hole in the water intake pipe of the cooling system. We made it back to the dock slow and easy with Bill keeping a constant watch that we had water coming out the exhaust. If the

Passing Days.

Tomatoes are getting ripe!! Between doing some laundry, bucket style, Will did some fishing and caught us a few mackerel that Kathy cleaned and stowed away in the fridge. Gulls like the head and guts; free food is good any time. Pretty sunset after a cool windy day. Passing the time with some puzzle games. This one has us stumped, but we are keeping at it. Water is calm today so we are planning to go out.
