Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville TX-Enrichment Day

Image
March 8, 2009 Today was Animal Enrichment Day at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville Texas. some enrichments of the past have been pumpkins, watermelons, gift wrapped packages, frozen treats. The enrichment today was a newspaper; it was organized by Dr. Tom the zoo's vet. Each animal was given a newspaper attached to a stick in their enclosure. Docents were to observe the animals to see how they reacted to something new in their environment. Some just came, sniffed at it and walked away, others tore it apart and played with the scraps of paper, others liked the sticks best and others marked the spot. We had a hoot watching the animals read the paper!

A Walk About Dean Porter Paark

February 5, 2009 Our morning constitutional was around the Dean Porter Park in Brownsville, Texas. We found some interesting things along the way. The bronze statues, the Heritage Complex and the Brownsville Museum. We entered the Ringgold Civic Pavilion and met Jamie. She told us about the Brownsville Winter Residents Club. They have some exciting events that include, movies, tours, classes, parties, talks and shows. You can check them out at http://www.winterresidentsclubofbrownsville.org/ We loved the tile mural inside the building. It depicts Brownsville's colorful past from pre-history through 2000. A reproduction of the original watercolor by Don Breeden was hand painted on individual ceramic tiles then installed as a 14 x 40 foot mural.
