"Today is a Good Day to Drive!" .....Van-Go

We stopped in the office at Luckenbach and dropped off a picture. We had made one last year and given to someone to post in the bar, but it made it into someone's house instead. So , this one gave to the office; hope to see it hanging in the bar next trip through. It is a collage of pickers and characters of Luckenbach during our first months in 2006. There are two such pictures and two on tee shirts (Kathy has the first and Levi Darr has the second.)

April 13, 2009 We were in the Luckenbach bar with Danny and the newlyweds, Bob and Donna (They had there wedding in Luckenbach yesterday with a Harleys them. They had an escort of 10 Harleys and they came riding into the tent on His and Hers.), when the phone rang; it was Jayne. She’d gone to the oncologist today and the new was that the cancer is back. They recommended six weeks of radiation and she wants us to come home. We said our goodbyes and made two quick stops. First was to visit with Jo after her recent operation; she is doing very well. We gave hugs to her and Walt then made our second stop at LBJ to give Iris the report on our opinions of the new CD for the tour road to the farm and Texas White House. Then we took off on 281 to 190 heading east. Today is a good day to drive. We made it as far as Lampasas and stopped near the river for dinner. April 9, 2009 We spent the morning listening to music at Luckenbach then drove around a bit and ended up at the park. We were sitting at Ladybird Johnson Park when we saw a flock of about 15-20 scissor tailed flycathers. They look so funny flying with that long tail opening and closing like a pair of scissors! While looking up at them we saw a helicoper with a big bucket come in and land at the airport! It must have been helping with putting out the big fires up north of here.

April 8, 2009 A Luckenbach day....coffee with Danny in the bar, music with Ben Beckendorf and pickers out under the live oaks, more music with Cowboy Doug on the drums and Soul Patch blues under the live oaks with the porch lights on.

April 7, 2009 We drove to Hye, Texas where there is an auto repair garage. The man was able to fix the broken window switchs in the Roadtrek so now Kathy will be able to open her window once again. To keep ourselves occupied we walked across the street to the Post Office and found it to be an antique store too. By afternoon the Roadtrek was back together and we drove over to LBJ picnic area and washed the dirt and grim off the Roadtrek. Will made a yummy dinner and we took an after dinner stroll around the park. Then we headed down to Luckenbach where Levi Darr was hosting for the evening.

April 6, 2009 Breakfast at Luckenbach was fun. Danny served the coffee and Will brought in hot oat toast smuthered in butter. Kathy visited with Miss Kitty. A few brave bikers were about warming their hands at the woodburning stove. We stayed and chatted with Danny, Virgil and Dave. We watched Danny sweep up the barroom then headed over to LBJ State Park. We did a walk about. The deer were grazing; the fawns still have their spots. The longhorns were looking for fresh hay and came right up to the fence. We visited with Bob and Dolly and caught Terry and maintence staff trying to fix a blockage in the pipes of the picnic area restrooms. We walked down to the farm and visited with Steven and Virgina. Iris picked our brains for ideas for a new bird blind. We ended up at the picnic area for dinner and the rest area for the evening.

April 5, 2009 The barroom was filled with pickers, singers and those of us most fortunate to be there. Voices blended in harmonies, guitars strummed, the harmonica filled the spaces between music melodies and the bass kept the beat. This was Luckenbach at its best.

April 4, 2009 There is a new novelty at Luckenbach these days: a cowboy riding a longhorned steer! He not only rides it around, he stops and makes funny poses for the tourists, lets people sit on the steer and get their picture taken. We spent the day at Luckenbach. We had a salad for lunch just like Sueann in Pittsburgh. We listened to music. Jake Martin came along; a young man with his own songs and a good voice.

April 1, 2009 After some time in Kerrville we headed out to Luckenbach where Scooter was hosting for the night. Her group, Gypsy Cowgirls, has disbanded and she is starting up once again on her own and looking for band members. Scooter was joined by Shannie, Catherine, and others. It was a little different as they were on the stage instead of a pickers circle under the live oak, and they had speakers. But it turned out to be a good evening of good music and a fun time. Berta told Kathy the secret places to find western wear and her it is: The Tractor Store!

March 31, 2009 We headed over to Walt and JoAnne’s after noon and started making sauce. Kathy doctored up a jar of ragu with some special spices turning it into an more of an Italian pasta sauce. Then she broke up greens and created a salad. Will mixed up some butter with fresh garlic and smothered a loaf of French bread. And so we had Tuesday spaghetti dinner. We ended the meal with a Happy Birthday Will song and cake. We spend the evening in Luckenbach listening to host Levi Darr and a circle of pickers. Danny Terry and Levi started it off. Joan came with her mandolin and several brought along guitars. We had a surprize when Hal Brown came along to play a mean harmonica and a thrilling flute.
