I70 East to Indianapolis Raceway

April 18, 2009
The rest area was beautiful with the blossoms busting open and announcing spring. A robin hopped about listening for worms. Will strummed his guitar; think he likes his birthday present?! We headed east on I70.

We are going to open a new restaurant called Van Go’s Bread & Beak-fest and our motto will be “ All of our food is fowl!” One of our dishes will be called Red Head Express, essentially a bowl of turkey legs served over spaghetti. This is the kind of thing we talk about while driving down the interstate.

Indianapolis Raceway is surrounded by city homes; we finally made our way to the entrance, under the bridge and into the infield. We could hear zoom zoom. It was just about closing; Kathy ran in to the visitor center and picked up an embroidered patch and then we went and stood overlooking the track waiting for a car to zoom past. None came. Next visit we will come earlier so Will can ride in a race car!

Just east of Indianapolis on I70 the vehicle in front of us was driving erratically. It went from the right shoulder across both northbound and back to the right causing a mac-truck to swerve lanes. The vehicle continued to drive a little crazy so we backed off and sure enough not five miles down the interstate, the vehicle hit the guardrail sending it across both lanes leaving litter everywhere. A man ran across the median and went to the man from the vehicle who was walking in a daze. Will got out and went up to the accident; the man who told him the vehicle driver was drunk. Will then tossed some trash so cars could get around, went over to the vehicle to shut off the ignition, but there was smoke coming from the steering column and looked down to see gasoline filling the road. A word to a couple on a motor cycle and the man who had run across the road and he walked quickly back to the Roadtrek. Meanwhile Kathy had called 911. We were about a mile from the accident when we saw the emergency vehicles and police coming in the southbound lane.

We stopped in Richmond, IN for the night.

Wow , I did not know you could just drive up to the track and walk in.. Don't they have a gate ? Of all the tracks we watch races at we have never been there. Mostly we go to short/dirt tracks.
Glad you made it safe and learned to drive between the lines. hee hee..
Love to catch up on your blog writing also.
We are leaving the Valley tomorrow 4-30-09. Taking our time going North.
Mary
