Birthplace of Calvin Coolidge-Plymouth
July 13, 2007
We woke to some peeks of blue sky, but mostly gray. Fate started in 6th generation of Fate. We drove out of our clearing into traffic on route 302. In Bridgton we drove into Highland Park and got a picture of their pretty lake. There must have been a mill here because we found holding ponds. The town looked interesting with shops and eateries waiting for the tourist to arrive. There are big homes here we have called Maine Monstrosities. They are like three or four homes connected together and the attached garage is also part of the house and sometimes even the barn. These people don’t like to have to walk outside to get somewhere in the house with their cold winters.
We crossed into New Hampshire and came to the mountains. We went a little out of the way to see the Durgin Covered Bridge. There are lots of covered bridges in NH.
In Ashland the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad Station still stands. We stopped in Bristol and walked around the town square. We continued on route 104 west, Ragged Mountain Highway. Our last stop in NH was just outside Lebonon where we stopped at a lake and made some lunch. Kathy napped and Will played Fate a while
Quechee State Park in Vermont is home to a gorge. The railroad bridge became US route 4. Woodstock, Vermont is a Sueann kind of town with Victorian homes decked out as B&Bs and shops and eateries and artsy fartsy kind of stuff everywhere. They even have a covered bridge. Drove through Plymouth, birthplace of Calvin Coolidge. We tried to take a little road, Roundtop, across the mountain, we saw a family of turkey, mom and about a dozen young ones. We climbed, but the road ended in a nest of gravel roads. We had to turn around and head back down the road…really steep! We made it to the bottom with our breaks screaming. We had to find an alternate route. We chose 100 south. That went through Ludlow where we picked up gas for $2.87. Just outside Ludlow we found a beautiful grass area with a gravel road going in and a short distance up the gravel road we found a pull off. We watched Nutty Professor and went to bed.
