Salt River Canyon Arizona

October 25, 2006

Will got up early and worked puzzles until Kathy got up. We are in Pacific Time now, just three hours different from Hawaii. This is beautiful country; the Apache Indian Reservation is on some incredible lands. We sipped coffee and asked questions about how life for native Americans on a reservation are: Do they get paid? Do they get money from the Casinos? If they work are they entitled to social security? How is the land on the reservation divided. We had no answers.

Our trip continued on AZ73 and connected with US60. Wow! Rolling mountains of red soil covered with short evergreen and tell pines. Rock outcroppings cap the reddish soil with molten rock. The valleys have wispy trees, maybe cottonwood or maple. The road wiggled through a canyon; over the Carrozo Creek and through the mountains. We came to the top of a pass and could see back to the cinder cone and where we spent the night. Clouds cover the sky, big puffy cumulus clouds with baby blue peeking through.

We entered Salt River Canyon. Awe inspirering. What a vista! Tall spirals, cap rock, sheer cliff, rushing water, soaring birds and blue sky with puffer bellied clouds. At one overlook we watched a team of ants carry a peanut; have you ever seen a team of ants do anything? Go to Movie Gallery and watch them! We did not stay on the rim looking down; we went in and through and across this magnificent canyon. We made it down to about 3800 feet and crossed the Salt River. The San Carlos Apache tribe lives here. We stopped at the rest area and admired the jewelry. Peridot, the birthstone for August, is mined in this area,. Then began to climb the other side of the mountain. There was a vista at every turn. We entered Tonto national Forest where the evergreen grew tall. Up to the top of another mountain and down the otherside. The tall trees gave way to spotted juniper and grass, cactus and yucca. We ask ourselves, what happened to the trees?

Globe is a western sort of town, reminded us of Terrlingua in TX. We drove past the town to a hill where we found ball fields and stopped to make lunch, play some boggle and relax. They had a new Walmart Supercenter in town so we located that and did some shopping. Then we went to Kelly’s Brewery and played some trivia. Mary and Connie, are you playing any trivia latel
