Loop Day Seven June 28, 2016

We installed the new wiper blade; now it can rain and Kathy won't have to climb on the bow and wipe off the rain drops so we can see.  The weather looks clear so we decided to go.  We are going to go across Chaleur Bay, about a four hour trip.  Here is Compass ready to go.And Will is at the helm.We were docked in the commercial fishing pier; see the big crab fishing ship.We had spent yesterday and this morning watching as they work on the new jetty.  Now we are passing out through.  See the black and white flag; it means there is a diver down. The green buoy is on our right as we depart the harbor and head out to sea.On the map you can see the red star for Shippagan.  The road going across the water there is where the drawbridge was; we had been grounded on the front side of that road for a day.  Then we passed through the drawbridge and spent a night at the commercial marina. There are lots of lobster boats out checking their traps and hauling in fresh lobsters.  Today is is our plan to cross this bay.  The blue dot shows where we want to get to.On the way we have to watch out for these; they are lobster trap buoys.  A little wavy from the boat going up and down in the waves. We past the Croquet lighthouse and are now in open water. This is the channel buoy.Just south of Le Gros Morne is a small harbor, Port Daniel and we are going to make for that. There are these large birds out here fishing; they have a slight yellow to their heads and black tips on their wings. They are Northern Gannets.  They make spectacular high dives and plunge headlong into the water; they are amazing in flight as well. You could see this for miles away; actually you could see it just after we passed the Croquet Lighthouse. Is that a shark? A dolphin maybe? There is another one. Will was on alert looking for trap buoys.Almost there now. Here is the lighthouse going in to Port DanielThe harbor was small we made our way around and saw this church andThe bridge, but we were not sure how to get to the marina behind those rocks next to the bridge and the water depth was going down fast.  We decided not to chance getting grounded again so headed back out to the bay.
They are still constructing this huge facility; wonder what it will be.What neat bluffs along the shoreline. And more of those…we figured out they are whales; they send up a water spout.Really neat birds. Now that is a big ship!Since Port Daniel didn't work out we are headed for Anse de Newport passing Le Gros Morne on the way.More whales arching; you can see we were leaving Port Faniel with he lighthouse in the background.About nine miles up the coast.Great birds these Northern Gannet.  You could see them waiting around  for the whales to arch; I guess the fishing was good then.We past the channel marker heading back out in the bay.And see the lobster trap buoys.Interesting cruising along the shore. Here are birds on the rocks up there. Not sure that they are going to be bringing out, but there is going to be a really big dock for big ships to get it.Our radar is not working….The sea is calm.Love looking to the shoreline.Slowly making our way along the coast. We could see sea caves.  See the telephone tower.  We have had excellent service out here on the water.Oh red rocks.More whales!  They are everywhere.Beautiful scenes along the coast to watch. That is where we are headed. That is a big cathedral on the shore.See the white dots? They are birds! The birds are waiting for the whale to come back or maybe they are off to find another whale. The Northern Gannet have long narrow wings. Love how they just skim the water. Two?They were getting pretty close.Northern Gannet looking for whales.People are watching the whales from shore. Those are all birds on the rocks; didn't get a close look so not sure what kind.Someone on shore had a sense of humor.Okay that was way close!Yippie the channel marker for Anse de Newport. And that was a whole that arched right there just off the portside.Made it to the channel marker as the weather is turning.Headed in to the harbor. Compass is sure glad to getting in out of the open water.Of course it started to rain.We found a wall to dock on.  Will nailed it and Kathy got the rope around the ladder.  We were docked and tied when the thunder started.  It didn't really last long, but we were glad to be set.Look how far we have come in the last seven days!  Amazing.Time for a good pasta meal.  The last of our bread.what a beautiful sunset. The boats are still coming in with their loads of lobster. It was fun to watch, but the rocking…we got use to the rocking and it  put us to sleep.
