Put-In-Bay, South Bass Island, OH

Here comes the ferry.  Miller Boat Line provides ferry service for both passengers and vehicles from Catawba Point and South Bass Island.  Today we left the van behind and went as passenger.

The main city on South Bass Island is Put-In-Bay.

We rented a golf cart for the day.  You could take the 55-minute historical narrated tour of the Island that stops at major attraction areas, but we wanted to drive every road and see all the nooks and crannies. Put-In_Bay is a small Ohio community and many people live here full time.

there are historical places to see.beaches to play on

and our golf cart to get us ther.

We found East Point!

The sea gulls put on a show just for us.

After a nice walk around the point we jumped back into our golf cart and off we went.

This is the Perry Memorial; it can be seen from locations all around the island.

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is the only pece memorial within the National Park system.  The 352-foot Greek Doric column, opened in 1915.  It commemorates Perry's defeat of the British in The Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813.  It also celebrates the long lasting peace between the United States, Great Britain and Canada.

We took the elevator up and enjoyed view.

That is East Point.

This top piece had to be brought up in sections and welded up here.

What a beautiful view.

You can see the entire island.

We looked out towards where The Battle of Lake Erie had taken place; where the United States fought for its freedom in the War of 1812.

There are a few flights of steps before and after the elevator.

Then back to our golf cart; we loved zooming around in it!

At the visitor center is a is Ohio's first public statue, a white marble figure of Commodore Oliver Perry.

Will reads up on his history.

The national park has their own little car on the island!

There is shopping,

boating,

and picnicking.

We followed route 357 from end to end.

Our main reason for wanting to go to Put-In_Bay was to see Crystal Cave.  It is the world's largest geode.

We were surrounded by spectacular celestite crystals!

The Heineman Winery was established by the family in 1888 and is still operated by the family today.   We took the tour and discovered the process for changing island-grown grapes into fresh pressed juice and wine.

Of course we had to sample some.

There is a Butterfly House with indoor gardens and lots of butterflies.

Off again on our golf cart.

Glad ours had this flag on it so we could find it among all the rest; we personalized it further by adding some gull feathers.

We stopped at Adventure Bay to see the pool,

and race cars.

We parked along the street

and went to Rita's for a view and a beer.

If you come to the island you have to rent a golf cart; what a hoot!

We stopped at Dollar Estate and sat in the yard enjoying wine samples and chocolate covered strawberries.

We walked along the longest bar in the world.

Listened to a few songs by Rachel Timberland.

After all of our exploring and driving around it was time to catch the ferry.

Her it comes.

Off we go back to the main land.

And we all arrived just before sunset.
