It snowed last night! We were parked at the rest area just west of Pecos, Texas. The winds rocked us all night. We kept the heater on and Will got up a few times to run the Roadtrek engine to keep the battery charged and to heat the engine hoping to keep the undercarriage a little warm so the water pipes would not freeze. We were lucky and although when we first got up we had not water; the pump went on, but no water came out, it thawed quickly with the Roadtrek running.
We found a wifi hotspot in town then continued on back roads to Crane, Texas where we stopped to visit with good friends, Jim and Francis. They moved up here from Marathon to be nearer their kids and hospitals, but they miss their old home. We got to meet their daughter
Lucille and Jim’s grade school friend, Tiny. Jim made a wonderfully yummy stew and Francis had made a chocolate cream pie. We sat around the kitchen table gabbing away and time too slipped away. We love Jim and Francis; we met them volunteering at Big Bend NP and they were the ones that had recommended Laguna Atascosa NWR to us. They were the couple we bought our Roadtrek from. They are good people. It was late afternoon when we gave them our hugs and departed heading southeast for warmer weather; it was to drop into the high 20s tonight and stay cold for a few days.
We loved the ride southeast on US 385. We turned east on US90 and found an wide spot in the road at Harrison Ranch. The sign read: 1385 acres for sale @$195 an acre Turkey, deer, quail and javelina; wells, pens and five pastures. Want to chip in? Real pretty country out here.
We watched Conspiracy Theory while eating dinner; Will made us shrimp with avocado and kiwi. It was 2am when the lights woke Kathy and she in turn woke Will. The border patrol were outside in two cars. They were just checking on us because we were so close to the border. We heard lots of border patrol vehicles throughout the night so we knew we were safe and being watched.
