Turned Around at the International Bridge in Presidio

Image
February 22, 2008 Along Farm Road 107 we saw some grass fires burning. We were not sure which side of the river they were on. We came to the border town of Presidio with Ojinaga, Mexico just across the bridge and turned around and headed back east. We stopped just a hike in Closed Canyon. We worked our way on the gravel and solid stone floor zig zagging toward the light. The canyon walls are so high above us we can not even imagaine what is above, but hear the call of a bird....maybe it thinks we will be dinner! There is no green in the canyon; the waters rushing during rains must wash away all living things. After walking about twenty minutes in one direction we had to turn around so as not to get caught in there in the dark. We never did find the end. We continued our drive back; everything looks different when you turn around!

Three Houses in the Desert

Image
Once upon a time there was a little narrow man named Flat Stanley that traveled with us this way. We visited three houses in the desert. One was made of twigs; it has since been blown over by the winds. One was made of clay; it has since melted away opening a view of the desert. One house was made of stone and it is still there. Flat Stanley was right to worry about the winds. We wonder what ever happened to Flat Stanley. What is your house built out of?

Which Do You Like?

February 22, 2008 We took these pictures with our digital camera. Which one do you like better? A, the one on the left, or B, the one on the right.

Big Hill of Big Bend Ranch State Park

Image
February 22, 2008 The big 15% grade hill along the drive scares many off, but it is an incredible ride. In the MR2 the ride was very enjoyable. At the top we met Reese and had a long talk about places to visit in Texas. Then, down we went on the other side!

Big Bend Ranch State Park

February 22, 2008 Farm Road 107 follows the Rio Grande River much of the way. It is a most beautiful drive where you are intimate with the desert. Our first stop along the way to enjoy the prickley pear cactus. Some are very purple and others bright green. The road rolls along and we stopped at the Contrabando Movie set to shoot a big modern western. Kathy got right down to the Rio Grande River to show it here at one of the widest spots along is trickle south.

La Jitas

Image
February22, 2008 La Jitas is a very pretty resort in the desert with hotel, golf course, a few shops and lots of rooms for rent. We stopped to smell the flowers; people were not very friendly; we moved on.

We miss you Ms Tracy

Image
February 22, 2008 We awoke in Study Butte to the singing of a cactus wren who was sitting on a cactus just outside our door. A landmark of this area of Texas use to be Ms Tracy's. She is no longer around. Today it is the Ghost Town Cafe. Eating there was just not the same for us. We missed Ms Tracy and the atmosphere of her establishment. Leaving Terlingua we stopped at our crystal find and it was still there! We picked up a little collection of desert crystals and continued our drive through desert country....how beautiful! The wide open country, dry air, open country, soft breeze, open country, colors of the southwest everywhere!
