Spot
It felt good to be in the Roadtrek driving grey road moving under our tires. We stopped in Eddyville, a small town with a few roads. The gas station served as a general store too. We got gas in the generator and picked up chips. An expensive bag of chips! And made a few quick phone calls to let family know we are staying out of touch a while longer. Our drive ended in the Shawnee National Forest Rosebud Campground site #17. Yep right where we were before. We set up camp a little differently by parking facing the trees. We sat down to enjoy the view of the setting sun between the tall trees when he walked into our lives as though he belonged there.
First he peeked his head under the camo screen, then sniffed the fire box, the firewood pile and came right over to Kathy looking up at her with his big brown eyes. He turned his gaze to Will who gave him a good scratch.
He stands as tall as a lab like Baylie and Cocoa; his head is squared off like Fish. He has a face of a hound dog and large floppy ears to match. Some how he reminds us a little of Red. He has brown on his head like Dutchese, and a spot of brown on his left leg. His legs are white with brown spots blended with the white He has a coloring on his back and sides like Mindy did, white with blended black spots. And he has one big black spot on his back that reminded us of JMe. We call him Spot. He has such bright friendly eyes. He is clean and well behaved, but has no collar. Will filled a bucket of fresh water for him and he took a drink and curled up and slept. And later when we had our evening snack we gave Spot a frozen hotdog. Spot stayed the night curled up not far from the van.
The next morning he got up when Kathy came out and greeted her with a big stretch and a happy wiggle to his tail. Spot followed her on her walk to the bathroom and back. She started a fire ( her first in many a year!) and he layed down near by.
When Will came out of the van for the day he too got a big stretch and in return a good scratch. Happy dog. We don't have bones along this trip so when we had our breakfast Spot got the same thing: Fiber One and egg. Only he got the yokes and no blueberries. He seemed pleased.
Kathy worked on her needing project and Will worked on sewing the gearshift boot for the MR2. Spot stayed close by. He alerted us when cars were coming by giving a soft growl then going to investigate. Once he chased a car down the road giving the a loud bark or two as if saying "get out!"
Late afternoon we decided to take a short hike. Spot watched as prepared like he knew what was going on, then he joined us. At first along the road he stayed at Kathy's side But on the trail he took lead bounding ahead, snooping off along the sides or marking the route. Once we took the right branch and Spot had already gone down the left branch. We thought we lost him to other hikers but a few minutes later he bounded along the trail and again took the lead.
The solid rock, the overhanging rocks making little pockets underneath, mounds of green shaded moss, golden leaves in the high canopy, mushrooms pushing away leaves and tree fungus forming shelves- feels good being one with nature.
Spot got some rice with chicken broth for his dinner while we had pork cubes over rice served with stir fried veggies and fresh cut pineapple. Spot is not a table begger and waits a distance way when we eat Will serves him his meal at the same spot each time a distance from where we eat.
Kathy had to coax Spot to come under the awning to get out of the rain. Somehow being within the house area was out of bounds to him. He finally did. Music tonight drowned out the pouring rain. Spot slept the night on the rug at the door. After watching Prancer last night we enjoyed Good Will Hunting as tonight's movie
Oh, we saw the cat! He walk along his path behind the camp. He stopped for a look, but kept on going. Spot was asleep but later jumped up and sniffed around right where the cat had walked.
Today is a Good Day to Drive!
