Slaughter Canyon Cave in New Mexico

Sunrise was beautiful out on the desert. We took our time going out the gypsum road. On our way out we spotted some wildlife: Jackrabbits, flock of 32 turkey, rabbits, vultures eating road kill, two coyotes running away from something, cows, and three pretty horses trotting along together.





We arrived early at the parking area and made some breakfast. Will practiced guitar while Kathy did some journals. The Rangers arrived about the same time as the others in the group. There were about 16 of us. We had to hike about half a mile to get to the cave; a half mile straight up! Well there were some switchbacks and part of the way is at the edge of the hillside! We made it okay with time to spare; the tour started at 10am sharp. Our guides were Stella in the lead and Andy in the back. Stella took a head count; we felt bad for the couple with a teenage boy that had seen the group and tagged along. They didn’t have reservations or tickets so could not come into the cave with us. They were very gracious and understood. We still felt bad for them and thought that they should have been permitted to do the tour with the group and pay later, but rules are rules. Many people, including us, did not realize the hike to the cave was straight up hill so Stella said she would mention passing along that information at the ticket counter.


Slaughter Cave is worth the hike up! Inside are massive spelothems: stalactites holding tight to the ceiling, stalagmites hoping they might make it to the ceiling someday and columns where tites and mites have kissed and spend the rest of eternity growing fat.

Spent the rest of the day in parking lot recouping from our hike above and below ground. Then, we watched the moonrise as we drove to the BLM Cottonwood picnic area for the night.

A couple questions,, Are your cards weighted so they do not blow away?

Just how good is Will getting ? With all that practice will he be a featured performer with Harley and the Bushriders next winter?

Pandemic

 This has been a strange year. We arrived in Florida in March and have stayed home since. That is about 6 months now. The Covid-19 virus has set the world to be a different place with stay at home orders, restaurants and bars closed, shelves in the grocery stores empty of toilet paper and antiseptic good, virtual school and doctor visits, hospitals that don’t let visitors enter and no only emergency care, wearing a mask when you are in public and people staying six feet apart. Who knows what the new world will be like after this.

Cliff married my little sister, Maria and became part of our family. We traveled to Italy together one summer Cliff had the coolest Man Cave! He really enjoyed technology and used it at work, home and helped everyone enjoy theirs too. He bought a boat that he and my sister enjoyed for many years. He walked his daughter down the isle. And welcomed Travis into his family. Not long after Layla was born and he became a very proud Pap Pap. He and my sister retired to Florida. Where Cliff learned to golf. One of my best memories are of our Cookie Days together. Cliff worked at Lowes and enjoyed his job in the paint department. He got sick; he found out he had stage 4-bladder cancer. We went on our traditional breakfast together each time we got together over the years. He finished the first round of chemo treatments. But the cancer went into his bones.
