Long drive from Texas into New Mexico

April 17, 2008
Just as Kathy was looking at the sun coming up over the mountains through the back window a highway patrol pulled up and asked if we were okay. Took a nice walk this morning down the paved Ranch Road 1832 and saw some javelina grazing along the side of the road. Will decided to chase them off, but one stood his ground and Kathy yelled for Will to stop before the Javelina charged him! We drove in to Belmorhea and found a tree to park under and have breakfast. We parked along the city canal and got a wifi hit so did a little emailing too.

We found a quonzitt hut and parked trying to get some shade. Nothing for miles. We made some lunch. Will played on the computer and Kathy took advantage of the heat to nap. Pecos has a museum and a replica of Roy Bean’s office, and the old train station is soon to be home of the Texas Rodeo Museum. The town looks like it went through a disaster of some sort. Much of it is boarded up. From Pecos to Carlsbad the land is flat and wild with brush. Oil rigs pumping up and down dot the area. In Orla we turned off on route 652 and went though dust storms. The air was thick with dust flying in the constant winds; it looked like fog. Came to a bit of a rise and Will spotted a cactus with about a dozen bright red blooms among the drab dull of the desert. Over the rise we saw the mountains at the distant horizon. After hours we still see those mountains at the horizon. But other than some birds, and two big eared deer, we have seen nothing and nobody. The last five miles to the NP Highway, US62 the utility company I putting in blue, black and white pipes. Dust was again blowing. We past a herd of cows with about a dozen calves walking along. We crossed into NM! And changed to Mountain Time. More construction like they are planning to widen the road. We turnd to prralell the mountains moving very slowly closer.

We pulled into Rattlesnake Spring, part of Carlsbad Caverns NP and had some dinner after doing a short drive about. It is very windy and cold here. We sat inside and saw a flock of turkey; one of them was pure white. We watched a movie and stayed til dark and drove toward the park and found an empty lot where we went to bed. About midnight some guy comes along and tells us we can’t stay there we have to go to the RV park. We got up and watched him drive around a bit and figured that the RV park was next door and he was the security guy driving around the park and spotted us. We drove down the road a bit and found a pull off where we spent the rest of the night.
