Horseshoe Curve, Indian Cave, Juaniata River
June 1, 2007
And another adventure begins for Van Go. Today is a good day to drive! We departed Jayne’s after hugs and waves and stopped at If It’s, our auto repair garage. They were replacing a frayed belt and putting on the inspection sticker. The rotor arm that goes along with the belt needed replaced also. The discussion was about how that could have been our problem with the electrical system freezing up each time it rained.
On the road again, traveling down the highway. We drove the gray line roads through small towns, past farms and suburban plans. Lots of construction going on in central PA changing from two laners to four laners.
Horseshoe Curve is world famous, a curve
where engineers can see their back cars. We stopped and picnicked watching the trains.
Along the banks of Spruce Creek near Franklinville is a cavern we stopped to explore, Indian Cavern. Back in 1928 the owner unearthed the body of a Mohawk Indian and a Petroglyphs tablet. A team of scientist of the time came and took the bones, tablet and other artifacts to the Natural History Museum in Washington where they remain for many years. Today the artifacts have been returned and are on display in the carvern. Two formations stand out: a massive stone shield that was carved by the rushing waters millions of years ago and the largest flowstone in Pennsylvania called The Frozen Niagara. There was a rock that when tapped made a beautiful sound; we each got to make some music. Local lore has it that David Lewis, the Robin Hood of Pennsylvania, hid a treasure in the underground tunnels. It was a good tour of the cave nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.
We made our way to the Juniata River where we found a boat launch. At the river’s edge we parked, had some dinner and watched the fishermen. We watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
