Arkansas River

April 20, 2007
Birds sang the coming of morning. We rose to a beautiful sunny day. The park is closed due to budget restrains, but the boat ramp is open to fishermen. We walked the short path leading to little camping areas that is closed now. Duckweed fills the swampy areas. A big worm wiggled and a poor snake never made it where it was going. Bright red cardinals sit and sing: twit-tu tu, tu, tu; a blue jay drops out of the trees to look more closely at the ground. Snowy Egrets (They sound like crows when they call.) fly out early and back late; dark cormorants (They sound like ducks.) fly back early and out late. The great horned owl, calling whooo whooo wit-whooo, sits high in the dead snag; he swoops down looking for a meal. Bullfrogs call, burrrripit, to us wanting a kiss.

Will busied himself with projects; Kathy read. She is now reading American Gods, a fantasy adventure by John Goiman. We ate our meal, played a game and watched the comings and goings of man and bird.

Fishermen arrived early in their little pick-ups pulling boat trailers. The backed their trailers into the water and their little fishing boat with outboard motor drifted off. They packed up their fishing gear, parked the truck and zoomed down the river in search of the right spot to catch a meal or a trophy. It was well after dark when the last of them come back. They shine their mega lights on the shore to show their way.

We had watched the stars come out and the smiling moon and were inside watching Chocolat when bright lights shone in the window and rap came on the door. Park rangers talked with Will. “What are you doing here?” “We just came to launch our boat.” “You don’t seem to have a boat.” “Now, that is true. Due to budget restrains we can’t afford a boat, but we still came to launch.” At first they wanted us to leave, but then decided we could stay till morning. We finished watching our movie and Kathy went to bed. Will is really into his Fate computer game. This is his second game; he ended his first by retiring thus leaving an heirloom for next generations. In his second generation he has more power and is moving through the early levels more quickly. Actually this is Will’s third game; in this first game he is on level 134, but back on level 40 he left a creature alive. Rather than go all the way back to kill it he chose to continue and see the levels and the “ways” of the game. Kathy likes to hear the stories about the creatures, treasures and strategies Will comes across in the game.
