Progresso

March 2, 2007

After laundry duty we picked up the MR2 and drove to Nueva Progresso, Mexico. We park on the US side and walk across the international bridge that brings our two countries together belly to belly. The streets are filled with vehicles and people. There are more pharmacies and dentists than you can count. We wonder the shops and outside vendors. Many work on their crafts while hoping to sell their jewlery, blankets and trinkets. One we really enjoy watching are the guys that paint on spoons and glass vases. It is just amazing how they get such beautiful art displayed using spray paint, plastic bags, and their fingers. These are truely talented individuals.

Our favorite restaurant is Iay Jiliscos. We are greeted at the door and enter into a small world for tourists and locals alike. Colorful banners hang from the ceiling, colorful oil clothes cover the solid wooden tables, and waiters are dressed in longsleeve yellow shirts with
green scarfs tied at the waist. There is alway entertainment. Today the men played and sang, a group of locals sang along from their chairs hooting and hollering. The mood was festive and after a few drinks we continued along the main roadway. We walked down past the school where children in uniforms were in the courtyards enjoying lunch. We came to the Progresso Market that is taking on more of a western look over the last few years.

We worked our way back across the International Bridge, through customs and back to the car. Back in Harlingen we called friends, Connie and Charlie, to see if they wanted to join us for a little trivia, but Connie had just finished cutting up some peppers. She rubbed her eyes and, yep, it was like pepper spray straight to the eyes. Several years ago on a very hot day, Will took our bottle of pepper spray and was examining it. Somehow it got pointed right into his face and he pushed the cap. Pepper spray right into his eyes! He dove for the water spicket at the rest area we were at and had water pouring over his face when Kathy saw him. What a clear image that still is! Poor Connie.

We watched Lost In Translation with Bill Murray. Will happened to look out his side window and what to his wondering eyes should appear but friends, Mary and Connie! They were out returning a library book and decided to stop by. We had our first company into the van this season. They came in, sat and chatted a bit. It felt good to have company in our little space. Thanks for stopping by.
