French Trip Colmar May 2, 2010

Image
After a morning in Riquewihr, we got into our rental BMW car and drove to Colmar.  It is a busy city, but the historic center city is for walking or taking the little train. There is much to see and enjoy here. The Medieval Church is beautiful both inside and out. Storks are a symbol of good luck all throughout Alsace Region. We attended Sunday mass for a time and enjoyed the beauty of the stain glass windows, the arches and the the remarkable history so well preserved. Maison Plister is the castle in the movie, Howel's Moving Castle.  Being so close to Germany, we found many German traditions as well as French. Like the gingerbread cookies that are given like cards for special occasions.   The birthplace of Auguste Bartholdi, sculpture of the Statue of Liberty, is now a museum.    Love the old timber buildings. This building, Maison des Tetes, was built in 1609!!  There is a statue of a barrel maker designed by Auguste Bartholdi that was added in 1902.

French Trip to Barr May 1, 2010

Image
People come from all around to  see the Grand Cru Kirchberg and the walled vineyards. I remember as a child doing this on a much smaller scale when Dad made is wine. Barr is an important tourist stop along the wine route. The belfry can be seen from all around. The town hall dates back to the 17th century. After checking out the restaurants in town we settled on this winstub, wine room, S'Barrer-Stuebel.  We were certainly not disapointed.  We enjoyed the melted goat cheese,  pork liver stew, frog legs.... And of course the wine. The family. Christine and Jack and their daughter. Good friends make the good times better!! Yum.....
