Happy Double Nickels Carmine

Image
Kathy's sister, Carmine, celebrated her double nickle birthday at our house with family and friends. We played games, had a nice fine china dinner and cake. The cake was the highlight of the evening. Kathy made the cake using two boxes of brownie mix, extra eggs and flour to make it more cake like, and put it in the fridgerator. When it came time to serve cake she took it out nd tried to pull out the skerwers she used to keep the foil off the icing. Sueann was there to help and they both busted out in laughter as the cake was heavy and as hard as a rock. Carmine sat smiling as we all sang the birthday song, then Kathy left her with a knife to cut the cake and returned to the kitchen, knowing she would never be able to cut the cake. Sure enough Carmine tried and tried and everyone was in stitches. Will finally broke it apart; it tasted good and rich chocolatay like a brownie should. Loretta enjoyed it the most! Red Head Express

To read about and see some fun times we had with the Red Head Express here in Pittsburgh go to "Archives" on the right and go to August; they were here the end of the month. Or just go to the end of this entry and hit "Older Posts" till you get there. The Red Head Express are a wonderful bluegrass, gospel group. We love them one and all.

Red Head Express at Nemacolin in Pennsylvania

We drove up to Nemacolin, about an hour southwest from our house, and played Roadies for The Red Head Express. They had a gig at the AAA convention there; what a beautiful setting! We helped carry instruments around and did the things Roadies do. For that we were privleged to watch the late evening sound check and the main preformance. As they finished their last song everyone in the hall stood up clapping. It was great. TheWalker family loaded up their van and we piled in the Roadtrek with the boys and LaRae and headed to our house. Brett called from behind us to ask about a tire place; the ones on the van were about bald. A few minutes later we called him to let them know we had no power, the battery was dieing...the Roadtrek just stopped. Will did manage to get it pulled over to the side of the road; we were on the Turnpike an exit away from home. Kathy climbed in the van with all the Walker family and drove for home while Will remained with the Roadtrek waiting for tripleA to com...

Red Head Express comes to Beech Road

Image
Our friends, the Walkers from Alaska stopped in for a visit during their first-ever trip to Pittsburgh. We fed them fresh local corn and tomatoes, homemade southwest burritos, and a can of cherry pie filling. Beech Road neighbors and some of Kathy’s family brought a whole table full of food, Will made a fire pit in the back yard, and we had a party. After dinner we sat around the fire; and, with the full moon rising, the Walkers took out their instruments. Our guests also just happen to be Branson Missouri’s showcase bluegrass band The RedHead Express. On a brief respite from their daily performances at the Dutton Family Theater they had just finished a show at Nemacolin Woods Resort near Uniontown. Now they were singing in our back yard.We will carry this memory with us forever as will those that joined us for the evening. We were so honored to introduce this wonderful family of bluegrass and gospel singers to our family and friends. On our way from Nemocolin the Roadtrek broke down s...

Breakfast at Beech Road with the Walker Family

Image
We had left them at the house for the night with beds, couch and lots of air mattresses. We arrived early and prepared breakfast: pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage and toast. Sitting our the dining room table sharing this meal together we shall always have as a cherished memory.
