Lightning Shatters the Main Mast of the Ship Hector

Image
June 28, 2007 The winds were up. The thunder rumbled across the sky. The Angels were bowling as Mom use to tell us when we were little. The lightning flashed. We stayed put listening. Finally it cleared up and we headed into town. New spread fast: The ship had been hit. The main mast was shattered! We went to New Glasglow to Dock's with Keith and Anne. We met their friend Gayle who owns a B&B in Pictou. We sat for a while up in the park where we use to go with JMe. Will Rondelet use to work on the ship; now days he is working with Parks and Recreation. We met his summer helper, Dave. Charlene was one of the Ship Riggers in 2002 with us.

Janice's Cottage

June 26, 2007 Work on the Ship Hector continues. Bill was filling in holes, Dave is painting and we helping out where needed. We had a few pirates come aboard today! They are building a handicap ramp to the Fisheries place on the waterfront; that will change the view. Robbie got an earring and the guys were making a little fun with him. Will showed Robbie he has one too. Janice is such a wonderful person; she has offered us to stay at her cottage a few days. We relaxed; Will got in his Fate time and Kathy had fun making dinner.

Playing in Pictou Nova Scotia

June 25, 2007 We enjoyed an evening sitting on the deck with Bill, his wife, Linda and their daughter, Kaitlyn. While sitting out we saw a small woodpecker work his way up a branch and fly off. There is a little building on the waterfront housing tanks filled with swimmerettes, baby lobsters. At stage four they get their pinchers and are then released into the Northumberland Strait by fishermen. In a few years you can look for the price of lobster to become more reasonable! They figure to release a million a year!! Bill and Will worked on some rigging and line organizing; it seemed to end in duel. Kathy enjoys sitting in the coffee house catching up with computer time.

Ship Shape for Ship Hector

Image
June 25, 2007 We joined the crew today. Corm, Gordon and Bill worked on the boards. Our job was painting. It felt like we were giving little butterfly kisses to the ship. She has lots that needs repaired, but we are making her look pretty until such time as money comes in to fix her up proper.

Spending Time with Janice

June 24, 2007 Sobey's is the local grocery chain here in Pictou. We did some shopping and went over to meet our friend, Janice. She loved her little gifts especially the necklace Will picked out for her made from Moose Island glass. Kathy made stuffed mushrooms and we had tacos then played some Mexican Train. We saw the neatest pink and yellow moth! Janice invited us to stay at her cottage for the night. Hot showers felt good and we did up laundry. We watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on TV with commercials too! Then we watched the news and well after dark we walked out to the Roadtrek; we could see the big dipper shining bright above us. There is no bed like your own, but it was fun playing house at the cottage. Thanks Janice. Janice is a realestate agent so if you are interested in property in Nova Scotia email her at janicegammon@earthlink.ca

Yardbirds, New Craft at Pictou Market

Image
June 23, 2007 We have had some rains and cloud filled days. Kathy sipped tea at Carvers. The Pictou Market opened and we met Valerie Langille who had a display of the most unique handcrafted steel & stained glass pieces. Check out thier website. www.yardbirds.ca The swimmerites, baby lobsters, at the new Fisheries building are coming along. They raise them then at stage four when they look like lobsters they set them free in the Strait where they will go down and hide in the rocks. At stages one to three they swim around eating micro foods like shrimp brine and very few make it to adulthood in the wild. We walked along the harbor trail and found a beautiful bunch of lupines.

People of Pictou

June 21, 2007 We are having a grea time revisiting sites, renewing friendships, and spending time in our second hometown. One afternoon we went out to Carabou Provential Park and made dinner; we ate out even though it was a little cool. Kathy picked up a little litter with Ali. The best seafood chowder is served at the Saltwater Cafe with a view of the Hector and the Quay. The girls that work at Carvers are all so happy and freindly; we met little Stella today. Kathy's neice is Stella also! We are able to wifi at Carver's and enjoy coffee too. We attended an event at the Quay and who should we see, but Spyder McDonald, a good friend and great preformer too. Walking though two we met up with the Special Constible who presented us with town pins. We can't get enough pictures of the ship Hector and the Quay.
