Tulia to Crane- Cotton Pickin' and Visitin' Stewarts

November 12, 2008

We had a lazy morning then took off doing some interstate time heading south. We made one stop in Tulia, Texas and drove that wide western street that is bricked today and had few cars. In the little city park we had breakfast then, continued our interstate driving. We passed cotton fields picked clean leaving their large bales ready for pick up. Other fields look like they are just covered with snow. So, that is why the Cotton Bowl is in Texas?! We saw an irrigation machine watering the cleaned cotton plants; do they grow back? Or do they water so when they turn over the ground the soil doesn’t blow away?

Before the day was out we were pulling into Crane, Texas where we met up with our friends and former owners of our Roadtrek, Jim and Francis. Hugs all around and time catching up on travels, health, and politics. We had met volunteering at Big Bend National Park. It was on their recommendation that we made our way to volunteering at Laguna Atascosa. And we have kept touch over the years. Jim and Francis were teachers in their former lives and being retired has not pulled them away from the children; they follow the sports of the local school children in Volleyball, basketball and football. They travel several hours away to attend games. They treated us to dinner at a local spot, My Friend’s Grill, where they knew just about everyone who worked or entered the restaurant. Our chit chat kept us all up til 10 when we finally headed for the Roadtrek.
